On October 23rd, Rutgers TechAdvance hosted the inaugural TechAdvance Showcase Event at the Zimmerli Art Museum in New Brunswick, drawing senior officials from Rutgers, as well as supporters from the business community. The event was an opportunity to showcase exciting technologies being developed at Rutgers to corporate partners, industry organizations, investors, and donors who often partner with academia to bring impactful new products to market. During his keynote address, Rutgers President Barchi noted the importance of industry-academia partnerships and encouraged local companies and investors to support New Jersey based institutions and technologies. Christopher Molloy, Interim Chancellor for Rutgers New Brunswick described how the TechAdvance program has grown since launch due to the efforts of the TechAdvance team and the support of generous partners and donors. He thanked supporters and invited them to engage with Rutgers and think of Rutgers inventors as a source of valuable innovations in the many areas of research being conducted at Rutgers.
Attendees spent the evening networking and engaging with the Rutgers TechAdvance inventors and there was a definite buzz around the room. A highlight of the evening was a video presentation featuring four of the TechAdvance award recipients who talked about their scientific discoveries and how TechAdvance was helping them to focus their efforts and move these technologies toward commercialization. Pavita Howe, Director of the TechAdvance Fund announced that the first TechAdvance technology had been licensed to a startup, while two Fortune 1000 companies have taken an option to license two more TechAdvance technologies. Two of the TechAdvance award recipients have also received significant gifts from a venture capital firm to further advance their technologies. And this program is just getting started.
